The Striders group is what it says. The object of each walk is to cover around 10 – 12 miles through interesting and beautiful countryside at a sensible distance-walking pace. The aim is to enjoy the walking, the distance, the situation and the conversation. If there is no conversation, we’re going too fast!
Walkers are expected to take drinks, packed lunches, and be suitably equipped re: waterproofs, spare sweaters and any anticipated medications. We take a coffee break along the way, plus other stops to admire/discuss the scenery. The world is also put to rights en route.
Dogs are not permitted on our walks.
We ask members to either plan and lead a walk occasionally or, if not too confident about this, to suggest good locations. Apart from local walks in North Wiltshire we have ‘done’ the Malvern Ridge, Pen y Fan (Brecons), Hereford area, a section of the Dorset coast and have plans for more in the Brecons and the Isle of Purbeck.
Members are expected to be competent walkers for whom 12 miles would not be too testing; also to be self sufficient regarding appropriate clothing, boots and wet weather gear. A day sac and basic spare kit is desirable. At our age it is also sensible and courteous to let the day leader know of any ‘infirmity’ that could affect your well being. Though it has never happened, the leader may decline to accept a dubiously fit member.
Members attend at their own risk. The ‘leader’ is such in name only and may not have the experience to deal with emergencies.
Our walks are not pre-explored so occasionally a planned route has to be modified on the hoof. It’s all part of the fun.
Our routes and plans are circulated to group members via email, and are posted below as well.
